New Gawler Farmers’ Market to open January 2016

A new farmers’ market, bringing together some of the best locally grown and made produce, is set to open in January.

The first-ever Gawler Farmers’ Market will open on 30 January and continue to operate every Saturday morning (8am – 12pm) from the Gawler Visitor Information Centre car park (on the corner of Murray St and Lyndoch Rd, Gawler).

Featuring more than 30 stallholders, the market will include an official opening and plenty of activities to keep the whole family entertained, including cooking demonstrations and kids’ activities.

The market general manager Elaine Ratcliffe said she was excited to bring the vibrant market atmosphere and some of the very best locally grown and made produce to the Gawler region.

“We’re so fortunate to have some of the world’s best produce at our fingertips here in South Australia and are proud to be able to provide even more opportunities for South Australian farmers and producers and the people of Gawler and surrounding areas through this new market,” Elaine said.

The Gawler Farmers’ Market will showcase fresh, seasonal South Australian produce, sold directly from farmers and producers to the local community. There will be a diverse mix of meats, fruits, vegetables, eggs, nuts, jams and chutney, breads and smallgoods available.

“A number of stallholders who trade at our Adelaide Showground Farmers’ Market will now be available at the Gawler market and there will be new producers from the Mid-North and Clare regions,” Elaine said.

“We have capacity to double in size and are particularly interested in hearing from wine, cider and boutique beer makers, seafood and dairy producers.

“All of our stalls are operated by the farmer or producer, so consumers have the opportunity to buy local South Australian food directly and meet the people behind the produce.”

The Gawler Farmers’ Market is being established through a partnership between the Town of Gawler council and the Adelaide Farmers’ Market with support from a State Government grant.

The opening of the Gawler market also marks the end of the Thursday evening Prospect Farmers’ Market, which will no longer continue in 2016.

“Our proposed Gawler market attracted plenty of interest from stallholders from both the Showground and Prospect markets and as a result, we’ve unfortunately had to make the difficult decision to close the Prospect market,” Elaine said.

“We thank our customers and the City of Prospect for their support over the past two years and hope to continue to serve them at Gawler and of course our Showgrounds Farmers’ Market, which continues to grow and thrive.”

The weekly Gawler Farmers’ Market will be officially opened on Saturday, 30 January 2016, 8am until 12pm.
