The 2018 South Australian Food Industry Awards were launched last night, and applications are now open for a range of awards celebrating excellence, innovation and leadership across the state’s food and beverage industry.
Launched with the theme of ‘Tasting Success’, this year also celebrates 20 years of this award program, which has grown to become the state’s premier awards for the sector.
Speaking at the launch at Coopers Brewery last night, Ms Catherine Sayer, Chief Executive Officer of Food South Australia, which manages and hosts the Awards Program, said the theme also recognises a solid 20 years of growth for the industry itself.
“The food and beverage sector has consistently grown over the last two decades, and we have numerous agile, forward thinking businesses of all sizes who are achieving important successes in new markets in Australia and overseas,” said Ms Sayer.
“Part of our celebration this year is about taking time to recognise and reflect what’s been achieved in those 20 years,” Ms Sayer said.
“That’s why we were pleased to launch the 2018 awards at Coopers Brewery. Coopers were the inaugural inductee into the South Australian Food Industry Awards Hall of Fame in 2005 and have long been ambassadors for our sector nationally and internationally.
Coopers also represent a winning combination of respecting tradition while constantly innovating to meet new demands. That forward thinking is vital to ongoing success for our industry. With this in mind, we are launching a new award in 2018, recognising an emerging leader aged 35 or younger, who is already achieving notable success in driving change in the industry.
“As the peak association for the industry, we are seeing businesses achieve success through their agility and flexibility. In a state where most food and beverage businesses are small to medium sized, and many are family-owned, the emerging leaders of the next generation are already beginning to transform our industry. These will be the ones to watch in the future.”
The South Australian Food Industry Awards are presented with the support of the Government of South Australia.
Minister for Primary Industries and Regional Development Tim Whetstone said the State Government is pleased to support the awards program and acknowledged the important role it has played for the past 20 years.
“Recognising our outstanding food and beverage businesses who are helping to create jobs and grow the state’s economy is very important,” said Mr Whetstone.
“The new State Government is committed to supporting our food and beverage sector and will increase Food SA’s funding to $1 million per annum to help grow the sector.
“With demand for South Australia’s products and capability within the food and beverage industry, this government believes there are significant opportunities for growth that can be realised.
“I look forward to celebrating the latest achievements of the industry through the awards program and would encourage food and beverage businesses in this state to nominate.”
