Food SA ENews, October 2011

An outstanding October coming for Food SA!

September was a busy month and the rest of the year from October onwards is sure to fly past for all within the SA food industry.

Fine Food in Sydney was a great success for our members exhibiting who gained many potential leads. Our joint national industry association breakfast function was extremely well attended and provides the connections for some potential national plans across the food industry into the future. It was the first time such an event has been held.

A number of great regional visits were made also to Clare Valley and the Limestone Coast, as well as attending the Regional Food Group Chairs meetings.

The Good Food and Wine Show is on again for the second year. An exclusive SA cooking demonstration area with Chef Cole Thomas will also be happening featuring South Australian exhibitors, through the support of Food SA and PIRSA.

It is your last chance to get your products analysed and provided with expert feedback through the CAP (Competitive Assessment Panel) program. Please send five samples of your product into Food SA by Tuesday 18 October 2011.

We recently met the current Graduate Access Program students who have been placed in member companies; Safcol, La Casa del Formaggio, CIBO Espresso, Maggie Beer and Angelakis Bros as part of the innovative program between SARDI, PIRSA and Food SA. It was great to meet young enthusiastic people who we hope will make the food industry their career of choice.

The Food SA team recently held a team planning day to review our first year and look into the future for 2012. We'd love to hear your ideas for what you think we could deliver for industry next year too. Please contact myself or the team at anytime to discuss your ideas or provide feedback.

Lastly Shaya Nettle is off overseas for a few months travelling – we hope she has a great time, she will be missed! Mary Ferguson and Bonnie Steel will be joining the Food SA team in the interim to help with a few specific projects, so please make them welcome.

continued... Nippy's

Jeff Knipsel, Managing Director shares his insights into what sums up his company, the greatest challenge and achievement of Nippy's and his favourite food.

Greatest achievement ...

In the late 1960s the formation of a citrus board forced our family company to shift its citrus packing business from its base in the Adelaide metropolitan area to be relocated on our orchard at Moorook in the Riverland region. This resulted in a loss of shed door sales of blemished juice quality fruit because of the difference in population between being located in Adelaide versus Moorook. We soon found ourselves dumping oranges, paying for them and realising the unsustainability of this, started a juice business from scratch.

Greatest challenge ...

Firstly In 2006 the first of four years of irrigation allocation restriction were implemented by our state government, this resulted in a dramatic reduction in the production of citrus particularly Valencias the prime juicing variety. The challenge was how does a juice company whose 40 year history and reputation based on the use of fresh oranges produce fresh orange juice for 12 months of the year when oranges would most likely only be available for 6.

Secondly it is our aim to become a truly national distributor so that we can become a potential supplier to more franchised retail outlets.
