Allergen claims are still confusing consumers

Plain English food ingredient statements aren’t as clear as they need to be. Food Standards Australia New Zealand (FSANZ) has released a Plain English Allergen Labelling report with several key recommendations to clarify food allergen claims for consumers.

A number of issues with terminology are identified in the report, including the lack of standardization and use ‘contains’ of summary statements, issues with terms connected with gluten and tree nuts, and issues concerning the lack of clarity around statements made regarding finfish/shellfish ingredients.

For more details on the report, visit the FSANZ website . This site also includes downloadable guides for industry on aspects of labelling including food safety information and Country of Origin Labelling.
