INSPIRED CANADIAN INSIGHT

Recently I was fortunate to spend five days in Toronto, Canada as a speaker at the Canadian Food Summit – amongst some very esteemed colleagues. The Canadian Food Summit was a platform to launch the new Canadian Food Strategy and was themed ‘From Strategy to Action’. The strategy is based around five key elements; industry prosperity, healthy food, food safety, household food security and environmental sustainability. Whilst there I met with the food industry representatives from Scotland, Ireland and Canada. Their industry models are thought-provoking and both Food SA and South Australia have a lot to learn, particularly from the industry led Scotland model which has produced excellent results.  Read my blog: Maple leaf moments: Inspiration from Canada.

WELCOME NEW MINISTERS

Food SA welcomes the new ministers in their relevant portfolios. Leon Bignell MP is Minister for Agriculture, Food and Fisheries, Forests, Tourism, Recreation and Sport and Racing; Geoff Brock MP becomes Minister for Regional Development and Local Government; and Susan Close MP is Minister for Manufacturing, Innovation and Trade and Minister for the Public Sector. Food SA looks forward to meeting and working with each minister and their involvement with the SA food industry.

SAFE AND SAVED FOOD

SARDI are proposing a Cooperative Research Centre 'Safe & Saved Food' initiative to include four program areas; Public Awareness & Education, Food Safety & Innovation, Food Packaging Innovation, and Food waste Transformation. Our recent Food SA State of the Food Industry 2013 report highlighted national costs benchmarks in different segments of the food industry, with results indicating the purchases of raw materials, packaging and ingredients represent on average over 60% of all costs during food manufacturing. A bid workshop will be organised for all potential participants on April 15-16, 2014, at the Waite Campus. The CRC bid will be submitted by 3 July; with a final outcome in December 2014 if the bid is shortlisted. If successful it is expected the Safe & Saved Food CRC would commence on July 1, 2015. NEW EAT LOCAL CATEGORIES BROADEN OPPORTUNITIES

Are you a caterer, accommodation or food tourism experience? We'd love you to join Eat Local SA which has recently added three new categories; Catering, Stay (Bed and Breakfast, Motels etc) and Experience (Cooking Schools, Tours, Farmers’ Markets, and other culinary tourism experiences) which serve to broaden the type of venues able to join Eat Local SA. Adding these categories was based on on-going feedback from potential venues, industry and consumers. As a result the categories of Butcher and Bakery have been absorbed into Retail, while Deli has been absorbed into Café. The new categories allow the opportunity for each category within all regions to be well populated.

Coorong Wild Seafood operate a processing factory in Meningie where we value add the seafood we catch with our two fishing licences in the Lakes and Coorong Fishery. We supply wholesale to a variety of retailers through South Australian and interstate.
